After hearing about the long distances the women
who participate in the Supplemental Food Program had to travel up
narrow mountain paths to get home with a baby under one arm and
several items of food under the other, Helen Robertson from Minnesota,
and several of her friends began making cloth shopping bags with
a shoulder strap for them to make it easier for them to carry their
bundles. I had already given out all my extra pillowcases for this
purpose, but there were not enough to go around. I heard they have
made many of these colorful cloth shopping bags. The journey home
will be much easier for the women with these bags. Helen has walked
with me a few times up the mountain herself carrying a load, so
she knows firsthand what it is like! There are times you even have
to walk through knee deep mud!
