The mountain road was nearly washed out in some
places, and we were worried that the dark clouds overhead might
make the river we had to drive across to get back home impassable,
but we did get to Joli Trou to pass out the supplemental food at
the clinic the week after I arrived back in Haiti. My luck was to
package the corn meal for distribution and I was powdered from head
to toe with it before I was finished. With little preparation, Merlene
Innocent was able to give a nutrition lesson to the women who came
for their food. Those big 100 lb. bags of cornmeal are very unwieldy,
but Edrick Etienne was able to manhandle them. Hanania was covered
in oil and Nadia was well salted.
This food is not enough to last for the month. However,
the vegetables the gardening teacher is helping them to grow is
stretching food they have for their families. We have been cosponsoring
this food distribution program this past year.
