Smiling faces greet me every Saturday when I go to my gate to
let the children in for our Sewing Lessons and Pre-Reading English
Classes. Most children here in Haiti are not exposed to scissors
at school, so we are learning to use scissors, thread needles, sew
on buttons & beads and other sewing skills. Our next project
will be to sew a wardrobe for our Barbie and other little dolls
that just arrived in our cargo yesterday. Molly Salisbury from Springport,
Michigan donated her whole collection to the children here. Before
we begin our sewing lessons, we study an English Language Pre-Reading
Program. They love looking through my magazines to find pictures
for their word books. This also gives them a chance to practice
their cutting skills. They say when they are finished with this
program, they should know 40% of the English Language. In Haiti,
you cannot get very far ahead without knowing how to speak English,
so we are trying to give them a head start.
