Celebrating Dorothy, A Legend in Her Own Time

Dorothy Frederickson had a dream, and in 1993, created this mission for Haiti, naming it Soaring Unlimited. Having gone to Haiti to teach, she observed first-hand the many unmet basic needs for so many of the Haitian people. With a master's degree (MS) in Community Service and years of experience in community development, she was the catalyst for the creation of programs and services to address the needs of the Haitian community in which she served. Dorothy's vision, hard work and fortitude built a foundation that supports the continuation of her work through Soaring Unlimited, today.

Most of the programs she developed address the ongoing needs in health care, nutrition, clean water and sanitation, housing and education. Our most recent project of upgrading our current clinic and developing the Women's Health and Birthing Center are seeds planted by Dorothy that continue to grow.

Retired spring 2017, Dorothy has been recognized by the Soaring Unlimited Board of Directors with the permanent honorary title of Director Emerita. Celebrating Dorothy and honoring her legacy were the dual themes of retirement events that took place in both Haiti and Michigan earlier this year. The local Haitian staff for Soaring hosted a wonderful party for Dorothy before she departed Cap Haitien in May. In August Soaring Board Members hosted a retirement party in Lansing including partners, colleagues, family and friends where she received a plaque announcing her new status as Director Emerita.

This amazing woman doesn't stay still for long! Dorothy has already decided what project she will be undertaking for Soaring Unlimited even in her retirement. She is spearheading our Baby Box program which will provide safe, clean beds for newborns. These Baby Box beds are specially manufactured for use in developing countries like Haiti. This fits perfectly with our increasing emphasis on mothers and babies. As each child is born, assisted by one of the midwives we have trained, at home or in our future birthing facility (project underway), the new mother will receive one of these special Baby Boxes filled with all the things new moms need to care for their infants. Another Dorothy dream-come-true!
